What is happiness?

In Hypnotherapy we refer to the term "happiness" as a nominalisation, a word that means something different to each and every person, one persons happiness or idea of happiness will most likely be entirely different to that of another.


Are you happy? What does happiness look like to you? How does it feel?


When was the last time you asked yourself any of these questions?


Perhaps you haven't felt the need to ask yourself, you are blissfully happy and content with your life. For some the idea of happiness is heavily influenced by their social conditioning and the ideas and suggestions that others give us that will bring us happiness in life, " you need a good man/woman", "I will be happy when this house is finished" " I will be happy when I get a new job/car/move house/win the lottery and perhaps most dangerous - when I am famous"


Life is passing us by this second, this minute, happiness is there for you to embrace, now this moment! You can choose to be happy - right now.


Happiness is not a possession, it is a state of mind, and we are at all times in control of our minds and our actions - if you change nothing, nothing changes. You are your thoughts.

"Avoiding unhappiness is not the road to happiness"

Unhappiness is a vital ingredient in being happy. To feel and truly appreciate happiness we need to have felt sadness and unhappiness – and that’s OK.


Happiness does not come from a store..... A new bag, shoes, watch, that rush of endorphins that we get when we purchase something new and shiny in beautiful seductive packaging. Something we have saved up for months for, or blown on our credit cards because we "deserve it", a little "retail therapy" that is what will make you feel better, and oftentimes it does, for a short while, but when that rush of endorphins settles back down and the item is no longer new or novel and doesn't "spark joy" you are back to where you were - looking for the next lift or fix to make you feel happy. Sound familiar?


"Happiness is being loved for who you are"


Isn’t this the truth? – self expression and being free to be who you are and be loved for that. Many people still quieten themselves down to fit into certain situations and adapt – but who are you really and truthfully? Do you express that fully and are you in return loved for that?


"Happiness is answering your calling"


Do you do something in life that you are proud of? – Do you volunteer in something that brings you a fulfilment that money could not? Is being a parent your calling? What was your life work destined to be? This quote raises lots of thought provoking questions to me, have a think about it.


"Fear is an impediment to happiness"


Fear. It’s a powerful feeling – it is just a feeling – and we must remember that, never the less being fearful can most definitely impede your route to happiness. Much of the time we are scared of life – scared to make a change, take a risk, push ourselves outside of our comfort zones.

Life is a blessing – every single day. Life is not about the destination but the journey, highs, lows, twists and turns, successes and failures, bumps in the road.


Today happiness for me is very different, it is found in a candlelit room in the winter with a cup of tea and a caramel digestive. It is in a long walk with my dog, a stroll along the beach listening to the ocean, the sun on my face, the crisp chill of winter on my cheeks, a Sunday morning spoon with my love followed by a lazy brunch, being present in the seasons and how beautiful the changes that they bring are. A delicious home cooked meal made with love and care, using fresh locally sourced ingredients. Time with my family and friends. Seeing something or somewhere new for the first time, returning to a place with happy memories. Feeling gratitude for a healthy and active body and mind. Dancing, watching a great movie, planning an adventure, trying something new, helping someone else.
