With the recent announcement that there is light at the end of our Covid-19 tunnel by way of a vaccine, what happens if you are terrified of needles?
We are not born with a fear or phobia of needles. In fact babies are only born with a fear of falling and a fear of loud noises. So if we aren't born with a fear of medical procedures or needles where does it come from?
It could be the needle itself, or the procedure of visiting the doctor or hospital. As with many other fears and phobias the subconscious mind at the time of the planting of this seed was in fact just trying to protect us. Naturally a child will not like the feel of a needle on their skin as it is an unusual and perhaps unpleasant feeling.
It could be the negative experience of visiting the doctor with an anxious parent or care giver, in this instance it could be a learned behaviour, It could be the actual needle itself, a bad memory of a previous childhood injection, extreme sensitivity to pain or even fear of restraint having been held down for a needle t be administered.
As with most things it could be any trigger that has created this fear or in extreme cases phobia and it may be different for each individual.
Hypnotherapy can find the root cause of the fear or phobia and it is there that we can re frame the experience and address the problem.
Other ways to treat Trypanophobia could be CBT or medication.
