It is kind to be nice - but it is nicer to be kind
Updated: Dec 14, 2020
Kindness can make us feel happier.
How? All will become clear - and there is science behind it.
Imagine a time when you have put thought into the perfect gift for someone you love, wrapped it with love and care and handed it to them, how does that make you feel?
Warm and fuzzy right?
What about sending someone a note or a card in the post just to brighten their day, how does it make you feel when they call or text you to say it arrived?
Have you ever paid for the coffee for the person behind you in the drive through queue even though you don't know them?
What about taking a cup of tea and a sandwich to a homeless person making a charity donation or volunteering your time to help another person or a charity?
"No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted" - Aesop
Here's the science (in its most basic terms)
Kindness, even simply thinking abut it generates changes in our brain chemicals. Releasing more of the the feel good hormone Oxytocin, it can also increase levels of dopamine and serotonin.
We all have an inner pharmacy and can summon up these chemicals whenever we need a boost.
"Being kind has a positive effect on mental health and the physical body - creating an equal and opposite feeling and reaction to stress"
Dr David Hamilton
Have you noticed how kind you are? Do you have time in your life for kindness?
Are you kind to others and also very importantly are you kind to yourself?
We are not born self critics, this is something we learn through experiences and other people. We can learn to re connect with our deeper selves and reduce the voice of the critic. It is about reducing self criticism and increasing self compassion.
Kindness can increase connection - at work at home, and in relationships.
Try it now
Being kind to others - Notice how many times you are kind in a week? Did you make someone a cup of tea, hold a door open, smile at a stranger? Send a thoughtful text or message.
Being kind to yourself - How can you show yourself kindness? Can you think of 3 things? Perhaps its taking a soak in the bath uninterrupted, booking a massage, cooking yourself a nutritious meal.
Kindness in contagious, it can create the ripple effect spreading across many people in a single day.
See how far you can spread kindness and share with me how it made you feel :)
