Believe in yourself in 2021
Updated: Jan 18
It's New Years Eve
2020 has been a year of uncertainty, unpredictability and the unknown. It involuntarily forced many of us to re think our lives, how we live them, who and what we allow into them and in what direction they are headed.
It has also been a year for me personally of reflection, growth, family, friends, new ways of working, more cooking, more dog walking and more gratitude for the simple things.
As the new year unfolds, many of us make New Years resolutions. 80% of New Years Resolutions have failed by the second week of February.
Why is this? Do we make resolutions that are unachievable? Do we set ourselves unrealistic expectations? Do we inevitably then beat ourselves up for not sticking to the goals? Do we believe enough in ourselves, our intentions and our goals in life, our purpose?
What is it you want from life? prosperity, romance, a new job, better relationships, more adventure, more fun? What is really stopping you from reaching your true potential?
What are your beliefs? About yourself, about other people, about the world around you? Do you believe that anything is possible and that generally people are good and mean well? Do you believe success and abundance are only for the select few and that people are only out for themselves? What you believe impacts your thoughts and your thoughts create your life - Change your thoughts and you change your world, and the world for those around you.
Since 1866 runners had been chasing the 4 minute mile to no avail. The harder they tried the less it happened. Was it a physical barrier or had it become a psychological barrier based on limiting beliefs? Scientists and trainers believed that it was not humanly possible, that the human body simply could not survive the strain of such an output.
68 years later..
Roger Bannister was the first man to run a mile in 3.59.4 seconds, why? Quite simply he believed that he could. His belief was unaltered, strong and determined, he simply wouldn't believe it to be any other way. He believed that he could and so he did, and an amazing thing happened other runners saw it was possible and they believed it too.
Within 46 days John Landy ran the mile in 3.58 seconds. A year later 3 more runners ran the mile in under 4 minutes. To date 1,497 people have run the 4 minute mile.
We believe in what others tell us
The Placebo Effect
How do we explain that in some drug trials 50% of the patients are given a drug and 50% a placebo and yet the results in some cases can be in favour of the placebo or sugar pill?
Harvard medical School recently published a paper stating
"Your mind can be a powerful healing tool when given the chance. The idea that your brain can convince your body a fake treatment is the real thing — the so-called placebo effect — and thus stimulate healing has been around for millennia. Now science has found that under the right circumstances, a placebo can be just as effective as traditional treatments"
"The placebo effect is more than positive thinking — believing a treatment or procedure will work. It's about creating a stronger connection between the brain and body and how they work together," says Professor Ted Kaptchuk of Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, whose research focuses on the placebo effect.

Ask yourself what you beliefs are, about yourself.
Where do they come from?
Are they true?
Are they positive?
Are they helpful in achieving your dreams in life?
